6:14 Then the Lord himself ¹  turned to him and said, “You have the strength. ²  Deliver Israel from the power of the Midianites! ³  Have I not sent you?”

6:32 That very day Gideon’s father named him Jerub-Baal, ⁴  because he had said, “Let Baal fight with him, for it was his altar that was pulled down.”

8:29 Then Jerub-Baal son of Joash went home and settled down. ⁵

8:35 They did not treat ⁶  the family of Jerub-Baal (that is, Gideon) fairly in return for all the good he had done for Israel.

[6:14]  ¹ sn Some interpreters equate the Lord and the messenger in this story, but they are more likely distinct. In vv. 22-23 the Lord and Gideon continue to carry on a conversation after the messenger has vanished (v. 21).

[6:14]  ² tn Heb “Go in this strength of yours.”

[6:14]  ³ tn Heb “the hand of Midian.”

[6:32]  ⁴ tn Heb “He called him on that day Jerub-Baal.” The name means, at least by popular etymology, “Let Baal fight!”

[8:29]  ⁵ tn Heb “went and lived in his house.”

[8:35]  ⁶ tn Heb “did not do loyalty with,” or “did not act faithfully toward.”
